Sickle cell disease SCD is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. If you have SCD, there is a problem with your hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. With SCD, the hemoglobin forms into stiff rods within the red blood cells. It’s the most common complication of sickle cell disease. It happens when the sickle-shaped cells get stuck and block small blood vessels. The pain often flares in the lower back, legs, arms, belly, or chest. It can come in sudden, intense attacks, called a crisis or an episode. Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease SCD, is a genetic disease of the red blood cells RBCs. Normally, RBCs are shaped like discs, which gives them the flexibility to travel through even the smallest blood vessels. However, with this disease, the RBCs have an abnormal crescent shape resembling a sickle.

The terms "sickle cell crisis" or "sickling crisis" may be used to describe several independent acute conditions occurring in patients with SCD, which results in anaemia and crises that could be of many types, including the vaso-occlusive crisis, aplastic crisis, sequestration crisis, haemolytic crisis, and others. The inset image shows a cross-section of a sickle cell with long polymerized sickle haemoglobin (Hb S) strands stretching and distorting the cell shape to look like a crescent.

Feb 03, 2020 The sickle shape is caused by abnormal hemoglobin within the RBC. Hemoglobin carries oxygen to all tissues in your child's body. Sickle-shaped RBCs can get stuck inside blood vessels. This can stop or slow blood flow, and prevent oxygen from getting to tissues. When this happens, it is called a sickle cell crisis. The most common types include sickle cell anemia Hb SS, the sickle beta-thalassemias Hb Sβ0 and Hb Sβ+, hemoglobin SC disease Hb SC and sickle cell disease with hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin S/HPFH. HbSS is the most common form of sickle cell disease. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria and to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
