    Metformin not digesting

Patients who see medication in their stool might wonder if it means something wrong with her digestion. If you are taking medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or even for colon cancer pain, it is disconcerting to see them where they don't belong—in your toilet. Seeing unabsorbed medications in your stool does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with your colon or digestion. Pharmaceutical companies make many different types of medication coatings from extended release coatings to cellulose capsules. In most cases, the body is absorbing the medications as it should and expelling the shell of the medication. Long-acting or extended-release capsules have a special outer coating designed to be absorbed slowly. While the medication may be released, the shell may remain intact and be refilled with liquids from your intestinal tract. My understanding is that the extended release have a permeable hard shell that doesn't dissolve...it's supposed to pass through you intact. Some people find that the name brand Glucophage is the best metformin, and other brands are unpredictable..work, some don't. However, I the pharmacist put a label on the tablets that says not to crush them, because they're time-released and need to be absorbed slowly. My own experience with the regular form of Metformin was grim, at best. I've been taking the extended release version since mid-December and am doing well with it. It helps with the dawn phenomenon and the occasional, mild nausea happens when I'm asleep. I think you should discuss this with an endocrinologist. You might want to google your problem to see what comes up. You can ask your pharmacy for another manufacturer. I had a not good reaction when pharmacy gave me a new manufacturer for a generic and when I told the pharmacist, she got the old manufacturer's pill back for me. This was a mom-and-pop pharmacy, not a big chain, and the big chains should be able to change easily.

However, even though the drug may be absorbed, the non digested shell can.

I too like Stiversmom have taken a disposable spoon and crushed the "shell" there is still a formed powder pill. Not sure if the word capsule in this context meaning plastic outer shell , medicinal inner contents or the shape of the pill. My metformin ER is DEFINITELY a large pill with no plastic outer shell ? This is the most common question about Metformin I myself have noticed. I have seen this question on this forum so many times. I think it would be a great idea if this side effect would be printed on the information pamphlet when you pick up this medication. If I was a Pharmacist, I would mention to my customers to not be alarmed and explain this side effect is common. Then it is just the polymer matrix you see in your stool. This is a common release mechanism for certain drugs to make them extended release. If they were not working, your blood sugar results would be sky high. They are large white almost the same as a large bean! People who take the number one most commonly prescribed drug for diabetes are also the most likely to stop taking their medication. Metformin works by reducing the amount of sugar released by the liver and improving how the body responds to insulin. It’s been prescribed to more than 120 million people worldwide. The drug’s lack of certain side effects compared to other medications are notable. Metformin puts little if any strain on the organs, doesn’t cause weight gain, and comes with the added benefit of being the most affordable diabetes medication on the market. Cymbalta is the brand name for the drug duloxetine. It belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). SNRIs work by changing the balance of the chemical messengers serotonin and norepinephrine in your brain. Cymbalta is most often prescribed to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and pain caused by diabetes-related nerve damage in the arms and legs. It’s also prescribed to treat chronic musculoskeletal pain and fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder. Many people say their weight changes after they begin taking an SNRI like Cymbalta. However, research doesn’t support that SNRIs are the cause. According to Cymbalta’s prescribing information, people who took the drug actually showed decreased appetite more frequently than people who took a placebo. Additionally, results from a study published in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment also indicated that SNRIs like Cymbalta tended to cause decreased appetite and weight loss.
