    My Mom took Plaquenil for many years for her rheumatoid arthritis. She was seeing an opthamologist every six months during that entire time. After many years, her opthamologist recommended she stop immediatley which she did but unfortunatley has one eye with macular degeneration which he says is due to her plaquenil intake. Aug 16, 2012 Anyway I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration 7 years ago. A recent exam showed it has worsened. I have also seen 3 rheumatologists, and 2 of them say I should take Plaquenil and the risk of damage to my macula is not big enough to not take the Plaquenil. One doctor says I should NOT take it. The investigators think that there is a connection between the use of plaquenil and the prevention of Age related macular degeneration AMD. The investigators believe that the use of plaquenil makes bruch's membrane thicker, thereby preventing Chroidal Neovascularization CNV growth.
