Plaquenil Examination. Plaquenil is a drug routinely prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Plaquenil has long been associated with retinal toxicity which can lead to vision loss. In particular it affects the macular region of the retina which is responsible for central vision. The recommendation is to have a baseline eye exam with dilation and a visual field test before or soon after starting the drug. A repeat of that exam should occur every year IF there is no evidence of toxicity. As a precaution, patients treated with Plaquenil are advised to get a baseline eye exam prior to starting the drug and then annually thereafter. This information provided by Neil I.
