A dilated eye exam is the best thing you can do for your eye health. It’s the only way to check for eye diseases early on, when they’re easier to treat — and before they cause vision loss. Learn what happens during and after a dilated eye exam and how often you need one. Continued deterioration in visual function can occur after discontinuing hydroxychloroquine, possibly due to slow clearance from the retina and systemically 9, 12. Screening is important in detecting early retinal toxicity before notable funduscopic changes in order to limit the amount of visual loss. Periodic eye exams in patients taking HCQ is to recognize toxicity, if it occurs, at the earliest 17 possible stage. Safe use of Plaquenil. In our eye clinic we frequently see patients who need to be screened because they have been prescribed hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil and have concerns, so I wanted to write a short article summarizing the necessity and purpose of proper eye screening in these individuals. Alot of the concerns are related to the problems caused by chloroquine, the predecesor to hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil. It was much more toxic to the retina and much more likely to cause permanent visual problems. Hydroxychloroquine, on the other hand, is much less toxic to the retina and there have been fewer reported eye problems. Dilated Fundus Exam.
